St. Anne Teaching the Young Virgin Mary

This is a rare variation on the popular iconographic type in which Anne teaches the Virgin Mary to read. There is no book. Instead, the configuration of the fingers indicates that she is teaching the girl religious doctrine. (See this page for an explanation of the configuration.)

I do not have a source for the date, but Anne was not usually pictured as elderly before the 16th century.
